This story made the rounds about 3 weeks ago and I just came across it in the new PEOPLE MAGAZINE.
Marilyn Mock walked into a Dallas home foreclosure auction to try and help her son buy a house. What happened instead was she saved someone's home.
Outside in the hallway, Tracy Orr was crying , as she sat by, awaiting to say goodbye to her house she had lost. A few years ago, Tracy was working as a mail carrier and bought the house for $5,000, and moved it to a one acre lot she owned. She took out an $80,000 mortgage to replace the roof, electricity and plumbing. Then she lost her job. And foreclosure came knocking at her door.
Mock and Orr were strangers. After hearing Orr's story, when her house, item no. 73 came up for auction, Mock started bidding on it. But Marilyn didn't want the house for her son, she was doing it for Tracey Orr.Mock ended up winning the auction, with a bid of about $30,000. And just like that, Pottsboro's sad goodbye turned into welcome home.
Mock told "Good Morning America" that she will take out a bank loan to finance about half the cost and will let Pottsboro and her family live in the house and make payments to her instead of the bank. She said she will pay for about half the house upfront.
"People need to help each other, and that's all there is to it," Mock said."She knows how much she has blessed my life," Tracy said. "Nobody's ever done anything like that for me before, and I hope that I can repay the favor. One act of kindness can change your whole outlook. That's what Marilyn did for me!"
From July through September of this year, more than 2,700 Americans lost their homes to foreclosure every day, according to The Associated Press. That's a quarter of a million homes in just 90 days.
