How Do You CATCH a Cold…How To Cure A Cold

Each year around one billion colds affect the lives of Americans making it the most common infectious disease in the U.S.  The biggest misconception about the common cold is that contact with bacteria is the main cause when in fact the cause is contact with a virus, which makes the run to get antibiotics almost pointless.

The most common ways colds are spread are NOT from being around coughing and sneezing people – but from hand to hand contact. Touching germ infected keyboards,  and ink pens is a great way to catch a cold!

Though there is no cure for the common cold, but check this out!  one little trick,  when you begin to feel sick,  is a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide into each ear.  Once the bubbling and slight stinging subside (around 5-10 minutes), drain onto a tissue.

If you have a cold or flu, try 3% hydrogen peroxide. It’s easy, it’s inexpensive, and you can find it at almost any drug store.

Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer

There are days when I think my life is falling apart. I got into a car accident; maybe I slipped in my driveway or my son got called into the Principal’s office. I even got fired. But, compared to the millions who suffer from chronic illnesses like cancer, my life is nowhere near falling to pieces.

If you or someone you know has just gotten the news that your health conditions are changing your life, it may seem impossible to get everything back on track.

Whatever the reason, you need an
action plan.

Here are a few tips.

1. Treatment
Exploring treatment options is a big deal, but doing it can help you to understand what’s going on with your body and in the world of medicine and technology. Being more informed can lead to a better relaxation and uplifted spirits. For example,
mesothelioma treatments include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and tumor removal surgery.

2. Alternative therapy
Searching for additional and alternative options may increase your sense of control over your situation. For example, some
mesothelioma alternative therapies include astragalus, used to alleviate chemotherapy side effects. Some breast cancer patients find yoga to encourage remission and an awareness of the physical self. Acupuncture and massage therapy may also relieve pain and stress.

3. Support
Emotional, financial, and, in some cases, legal support is always a plus for those struggling with chronic illnesses. Having people, or entire organizations, in your corner may mean stress-relief and transference of burdens.
Support groups and family therapy may also help you to connect with yourself and others concerning the trials of your illness.

So, if your life is falling apart, there’s help and hope. You can still pick the pieces up and with these tips and an action plan, embrace a new day and a new life of strength and health.

Clean Up Crews getting Sick From Oil Spill

On Wednesday, The Los Angeles Times reported that fishermen hired to cleanup BP’s mess were coming down with nausea, severe headaches, and breathing problems after working in waters contaminated by the nation’s worst oil spill.

BP reportedly told the workers that if they encountered oil, it “wasn’t supposed to bother [them].” BP did not distribute gloves, suits, or any other kind of protective gear.

Sick animals and sick people. Harbor seals and birds were looking like they were drunk and dying … and autopsies showed brain lesions….What are we exposing these poor people to?” WHO is going to fix this mess???

I am so disgusted that they had no contingency plan for an accident like this.

This morning it was  stated  ” BP plugged  the leak and  has stopped the hydrocarbons from coming up  the well. However, they cautioned that the operation to seal the well permanently was not complete…”

Abilify May Be Harmful To Your Health…Can it Kill You?

Andy Behrman, a former spokesman for Abilify and Bristol Myers Squibb, discusses his side effects from Abilify, the “wonder drug” of Bristol Myers Squibb.

In 2004, Mr. Behrman, a 42-year-old bipolar patient said it was a miracle drug!  He recounted how a Bristol-Myers drug, called Abilify, had changed his life. Unlike other medicines he had tried, Abilify had no side effects, he said. The testimonial drew a standing ovation. He had only taken the drug a few days when he made that statement.

Wall Street Journal says  there has been a lot of finger pointing; he said, she said, etc.

Andy Behrman now speaks out about ABILIFY and sent a personal note to me today (1/04/10) stating:

Dear Derrick,

Can Abilify kill you? Sure it can.

You have to keep in mind that Abilify is the drug that Bristol Myers Squibb marketed illegally to children and ended up paying a $515 million fine to the U.S. Government.  You certainly won’t get a comment from Sonia Choi, Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Spokeswoman – – they wish that they had never hired somebody like myself, who after a non-disclosure ended, would tell the truth about how Abilify was marketed and there’s plenty more coming!

I read with interest your blog and would be more than happy to speak with you.

Andy Behrman

That is awesome!  These drug companies are ridiculous in what they’ll do for money.  Thank you Andy!

The Power of Self-Image and Confidence That Comes from Clear Skin

First let me preface this by saying that this IS NOT a paid testimonial or affiliate marketing plug, but instead just a personal story that I wish to share with you.

For many years I’ve had the pleasure to do a lot of public speaking and certainly the confidence and self-image I feel comes across to the audience.  My skin, especially my face, has been very high maintenance since my teens and diminished  how I feel about myself (photo is from last Thursday, I could have used some more powder to reduce the shine ~ it was very hot in this club:-).

Many of my problems can probably globally be attributed to the winter vacation trips from Michigan to Florida where I would lay out in the sun covered in baby or olive oil on a mirror-reflector-type panel to be sure I returned home  looking like George Hamilton.  Obviously, these were pre-sun-screen-era days and everyone did it.

However, usually by day 3 of the trip, my skin would start to peel from the burns and I usually returned home and back to school looking like I had a disease, as opposed to this gorgeous Florida sun-kissed tan I was seeking.

In addition, I was in an accident in 2005 that required $20,000 of plastic surgery to repair, so needless to say, I am aware of how my face appears and it can definitely make me very self-concious.

Anywho, today my skin and face remain very problematic for whatever reasons.  Over the last 2 years I’ve struggled with these cysts under the skin that are hard and never “erupt” like a typical blocked pore or acne would do.  I underwent a laser treatment that blasted 98 cysts on my face- major ugh.  The recovery time was about six weeks before I felt comfortable being seen in public and in some spots I was left with these deep, pitted scars from the laser treatment itself.  Within six months the cysts began to return – how nice is that, huh?

My dermatologist suggested I take a low dose of Accutane.  Let me tell you about this drug:  A nightmare to get every 30 days because it has been proven to cause birth defects in a percentage of women who got pregnant while on it!  So as a gay man you would think I wouldn’t have to jump through all the same hoops every 30 days, I’m not planning on procreating anytime soon, but I did have to go through all this crazy stuff and my Doctor had to be involved every month, because it can also be toxic to the liver and has so many other potential devastating side effects and you have to have blood work done nearly every month to make sure your liver isn’t being damaged and more, and more, and more ~ nice right!?

So I quit taking the pills after a few months and the cysts continued.  I had a friend suggest ProActiv’s program but I remembered watching on The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency’s show last season her promotion of Sensi-Clear (I admit, I do love Janice ~ think she’s fabulous and love her show!).  And I was amazed at the results of some of her models (now in the new season) and how clear their skin looked…so I tried it.

Immediately (within first 2 days) my skin responded.  I don’t have any before and after photos to share (by choice) so you’ll just have to trust me.

The program is really simple, 3-4 steps AM or PM, and the Acne Spot Reduction Cream which I put on at night on the cysts really has done a better job of reducing them than the Accutane and without the side-effects and the drama of getting a nasty, health hazardous prescription filled each month.

So my point of this post is…  if you have any facial skin issues – give this program a try – what do you have to loose.  It’s like $7.95 for S&H only for month one (product is free) and $25 total each month thereafter for all products.  I’m extremely pleased with how my face looks each day therefore my self-image and confidence and how I come across to others continues to grow again and I feel very comfortable speaking to groups without being concerned of how my face looks up close.

Let me know if you try it, again this is not a paid promo and what sort of results you see and if it worked for you and helped with your self-esteem!

All the very best!
